Description

Greenhill Primary School, built in 1902 by James Davidson, is a single-storey building with a basement, featuring a rectangular plan and Renaissance-style details, situated on sloping ground. The basement is constructed of bull-faced sandstone coursers, while the principal floor is made of snecked rubble and ashlar, with ashlar dressings and a modern tiled roof. The windows include single 6-pane windows in the basement and mostly single and bipartite 10-pane sash and case windows on the principal floor. Architectural features include a cill course, Ionic pilasters, a corniced parapet with urn finials, and stepped gables on the angle pavilions.

The front elevation is symmetrical, featuring a central ogival-headed and lugged moulded doorcase, with a keystoned and architraved oval window above. There is a broken segmental pediment with an obelisk finial at the parapet, and large cross-windows on either side with moulded lugged architraves and pedimented transoms. Slightly advanced 3-bay pavilions on the left and right have tripartite depressed-arch windows in the centre, flanked by single windows and pilasters, along with four basement windows on the left pavilion.

The side elevations are asymmetrical and simpler than the front but maintain similar detailing. Inside, the school is largely unaltered, featuring some pedimented overdoors and fine Art Nouveau tiles in the entrance hall.

The boundary walls are made of coped snecked rubble, complemented by original iron railings and gates, along with various gatepiers and gateways.
