Description

Sylvania is a 1913, two-storey, three-bay, L-plan villa located within the Brodick Castle Estate. It features a prominent gabled stone porch at the re-entrant angle and has overhanging eaves with barge boards on the gables. The principal elevation is made of pink hammer-dressed sandstone laid in irregular courses, with ashlar dressings, while the other elevations have plain irregular coursing. The villa is set within a garden plot to the north of a paddock, with its main entrance facing south.

On the south elevation, there is a projecting bay on the ground floor to the left, which includes a canted three-light bay window, and a bipartite window to the right. The upper right features a single breaking-eaves dormer, while the upper left has another bipartite window. The entrance consists of a double leaf, vertically boarded door set within a four-centred arch aperture leading to the stone porch. The inner door is panelled and half-glazed, with coloured textured glass. The north elevation displays asymmetrical fenestration, with a vertically boarded timber kitchen door on the left and a large door to the coal store on the right.

The villa has timber sash and case windows with multi-paned upper sashes. The roof is covered with grey slates, including the projecting bay and pitched porch roof, and features stone chimney stacks with corniced coping.

The interior, as seen in 2010, includes timber stairs with a turned balustrade made of dark pine, original timber panelled doors, and a timber fire surround with an iron inset in the drawing room. Various cast iron fire surrounds are present in the upper rooms, although the fireplace or range has been removed from the kitchen. The original timber fittings, including cupboards and architraves, remain, along with plain plaster cornices in all rooms.
