Description

Fairlie School, dated 1887, was designed by J J Stevenson of London, with H Walker of Fairlie. It is a single-storey building set on a slope, incorporating a raised basement to the west. The building is constructed in a Scottish Jacobean style, with a cruciform plan. The eastern re-entrant angles have been filled with lower, flat-roofed rooms. The exterior is a combination of polygonal masonry at the basement, bullfaced and snecked ashlar above, with polished dressings.

The west elevation features an inner gable with a central stepped buttress supporting a corbelled, pedimented bellcote topped with a finial, and two tall, pedimented windows. A basement door and a bipartite window are positioned to the left of the gable, with a decorative datestone to the right. A continuous string course runs above the basement, and a wide eaves band sits above the string. Bipartite windows are located below relieving arches in the north and south gables, and tall stacks are visible over the north-east and south-east angles. The east elevation features numerous openings, and a long outbuilding extends from the projecting inner bay. Windows generally have small panes and are set in roll-moulded architraves. The building is characterised by crow-stepped gables and slate roofs.

The playground is enclosed by rubble-built walls. At the west are square ashlar gatepiers capped with pyramids, decorative wrought-iron gates, and railings leading to steps. The school opened on 22 November 1887.
