Millport Field Centre, Marine Parade, Millport

Millport Field Centre, built between 1896 and 1897 with a west wing and a 1904 addition linking to a 1939 wing by J B Wilson, Son & Honeyman, is a former marine station designed in a U-shape. It features two 2-storey, 8-bay gabled wings connected by a 2-storey, 6-bay section. The building is located on the south-east coast of Great Cumbrae, overlooking the sea towards the mainland. It is constructed from red and cream squared sandstone rubble, with band courses on the south gable elevations. The upper storey of the south gables has large Diocletian (semi-circular) windows set in recessed round arches, facing the sea.

The roofs are covered with concrete tiles and synthetic slates, featuring red ridge tiling and raised shouldered skews. The 1897 building includes non-traditional large rooflights, and there are some timber casement windows, although most windows have been replaced with non-traditional options.

The interior was last seen in 2014. The upper floor room of the 1897 building serves as a library and features an open timber roof with corbels. The stair has decorative metal balusters and a timber banister. Additionally, there is a 1953 aquarium within the building and some part-glazed doors.
