Description
379 Garrynamonie is a single-storey, Hebridean-type thatched cottage with two rubble outbuildings, likely dating to the mid-19th century with later alterations. It is located at the far western end of the township of Garrynamonie, on the southwest coast of South Uist, between Loch an Eilean and Loch Fada.
The cottage features thick harl-pointed rubble walls with rounded corners. The window openings are small and deeply recessed. The front elevation, facing east, is three bays wide, with a central entrance flanked by windows. The entrance has a later lean-to porch that is harled and has a corrugated iron roof, with a window opening on each side of the porch. The rear (west) elevation has one small, central window opening, while the end walls are solid with no openings, each topped with a later rubble chimneystack with short pots.
The windows have timber sash and case frames, with a four-pane glazing pattern on the front windows. The piended roof is thatched in marram grass in the Uist style, with the thatch resting on the outer wall and extending over the edge, featuring a continuous thatched marram ridge. The roof is netted and weighted along the eaves and around the chimneystacks with stones tied to the netting with wire, and small metal tubes further secure the thatch around the stacks. There is some missing thatch at the rear of the roof, exposing the roof timbers and the interior of the cottage.
To the northeast of the cottage are two outbuildings. The nearest to the cottage is likely a byre, which has a small henhouse attached to its north elevation. This gabled structure is harled, has a corrugated iron roof with a rooflight, an off-centre door, and two small windows in the east elevation. The smaller square outbuilding has rubble walls and a central door but is currently unroofed as of 2015.
