Cottage And Coach House, Amhuinnsuidhe, Harris

The Archway at Amhuinnsuidhe in Harris, built around 1867, is attributed to architect David Bryce as part of his work for the Earl of Dunmore. This carriage archway, which may have been heightened in recent years, spans the main road and leads to a long two-storey row of cottages, along with a former coach house and stables. The structure is built of rubble with imported ashlar dressings.

The archway features a castellated design with a drum tower at the south end, topped by an iron finial that rises from within the parapet. A lean-to screen wall connects to a rubble wall that extends southward, serving as a retaining wall and flood barrier at the eastern end of the mansion house's front garden.

The long row of buildings is two storeys high, flat-fronted, and has crow-stepped gables with chamfered margins. The ground floor openings are stepped to follow the slope, while the eaves level remains unbroken. At the eastern end, there are three flat-lintelled openings for the coach house, featuring relieving arches, alongside four bays that likely served as stables, with a single loft opening. The remainder of the row consists of domestic housing, with sash windows displaying a four-pane glazing pattern, end and axial stacks, and a slate roof.
