Description
The driveway bridge at Lews Castle in Stornoway, Lewis, is believed to have been designed by Charles Wilson as part of the enhancements made for Sir James Matheson, who acquired the estate in 1844. However, it is also possible, though less likely, that it was built earlier for the Seaforth MacKenzies. The bridge features a large single segmental arch constructed from rubble, with rock-faced ashlar voussoirs and abutment buttresses. A band course on the upper part of the stonework defines the parapets, which are topped with spiked wrought-iron railings.
