Description
147-149 High Street in Elgin is a building designed by Marshall Mackenzie between 1870 and 1880. It stands three storeys tall with an attic and features four bays. The right side has a modern shop front, while the original entrance includes a bowed oriel window above and a roll moulded architrave on the second-floor window. The facade is made of ashlar stone. The first-floor windows are connected by moulded cill courses, and there is a moulded string course between the first and second floors. The left bay has a crowstepped gablet that encloses a small oriel, reminiscent of the one found on Ritchie's House. Above the parapet, there are three dormers with ornate pediments that display carved beasts, finials, and initials. The roof is covered with Banffshire slate.
Inside, there is a large Jacobean fireplace in the first-floor room, featuring a chimneypiece dated 1688. The fireplace measures 8 feet high and 10 feet wide, although it is temporarily blocked except for the moulded and crested overmantel, which is supported by a pair of caryatids.
