Description
Cowiesburn House is a mid-19th century, symmetrical, three-bay, two-storey and attic house constructed in a Gothic style. The exterior is predominantly harled with ashlar dressings and margins. A shallow, projecting porch, finished in ashlar, sits at the centre and is gabled with bargeboarding. Pointed windows are positioned on either side of the porch; three windows are visible on the first floor and are similarly detailed, rising through projecting eaves in gablets. The two-bay flanks feature a comparable window arrangement. The windows are fitted with Gothic glazing. Four symmetrical corniced ridge stacks are present, along with a piended and platform slate roof.
The building served as the former Pluscarden Free Church Manse, though it was not originally constructed as such. It was purchased by the Free Church in 1888 using funds raised at a bazaar in Elgin. The house appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1876.
