Description
Priory Lodge, built in 1820-21 by James McBride, serves as a lodge associated with Pluscarden Abbey. It was originally a cruciform design, a single-story building with a dormerless attic and three bays. The construction utilizes coursed rubble with ashlar dressings.
The west front features a projecting, crowstepped and gabled porch. This porch has a pointed hoodmoulded door and a pointed, latticed, glazed fanlight, with a blind trefoil above. Flanking the porch are pointed arched windows with hoodmoulds and gothic glazing. A similar window is located at the center of the east gable, and another is present in the center of the south gable in the attic. The gables are crowstepped, terminating in stone crosses, and a central ridge displays a battery of three diamond stacks. The roof is covered with West Highland slate and has a stone ridge. A matching extension was added to the northeast corner around 1984.
The Earl of Fife purchased Pluscarden in 1821 and built the lodge shortly thereafter.
