Description

The Duke of Gordon Monument, located on Lady Hill in Elgin, was designed by architect William Burn from Edinburgh in 1839 and stands 80 feet high. The monument features a Roman Doric column topped with a statue of the Duke of Gordon, dressed in the robes of Chancellor of Marischall College, Aberdeen. This statue was added later, between 1854 and 1855, and was sculpted by Thomas Goodwillie, with architectural work by Mackenzie and Mathews from Elgin during the same period. The monument is set on a stepped plinth and is enclosed by cast-iron spearhead railings that include iron stiffeners.
