Description
The War Memorial Clock Tower at Newmill is a four-stage tower constructed in 1922-23 to the design of F A Robertson. It serves as a war memorial, standing on a square footprint. The tower is built of tooled rubble stone with tooled ashlar dressings. The ground floor features shallow, pedimented bays linked by a continuous string course, with a plaque on three faces and an entrance on the fourth. Narrow, single windows with multi-pane glazing are positioned in the centre of the second and third floor faces. The upper stage is corbelled and features a clock face on each elevation, all set beneath crowstepped and finialled gablets. At the top is a central, pagoda-style cupola terminating in a slender metal spiked ball finial. The memorial is situated in the centre of Newmill village square. The design was by F A Robertson, who died before the tower’s completion. Work was subsequently completed and coordinated by contractor W A Donald of Newmill, with assistance from local volunteers. The dedication of the tower was reported in the Banffshire Advertiser on 26 July 1923.
