Description
The building at 161 and 163 Mid Street in Keith is a bank constructed in 1908 by J D Corrigall. It features an irregular wide three-bay design with Renaissance decorative details on the street frontage. The exterior is made of bullfaced rubble with extensive polished ashlar dressings.
The southwest bay is wide and includes a central door leading to the banking hall, flanked by windows beneath a shallow segmental arch. To the left, there is a similar but narrower ground floor window. The entrance to the upper floor is located in a narrow northwest bay, topped with a round-headed light.
The first floor showcases square-headed transomed and/or mullioned windows, with configurations of two, four, or six lights. The bays are defined by blocked engaged columns at the ground floor and Ionic pilasters at the first floor, with projecting mutule cornices between the ground and first floors, as well as at the wallhead. A pediment crowns the outer banking hall bay, featuring a central oculus within a swagged tympanum.
The return gable is made of bullfaced rubble and includes paired ground floor mullioned and transom windows, along with two single first floor windows. There is also a further gabled rear wing with irregular window placements. The building has single pane glazing, coped end stacks, and slate roofs.
