Description

53 Bonnyrigg Road in Dalkeith is a pair of mirrored, two-storey houses built in the later 19th century. The first floor extends beyond the eaves, and the houses are connected by single-storey bays. The west elevation features stugged squared and snecked masonry, with No 53 having been stone cleaned, while the other elevations are made of rubble with ashlar dressings. There is a base course with chamfered margins that stop before the cill, and curvilinear dormerheads.

On the west elevation facing Bonnyrigg Road, No 51 has a central doorway with a raised margin, cornice, and angled tablet, along with a panelled door and a two-pane fanlight. To the left, there is a canted window in the bay with a cornice and blocking course. On the right, a tripartite window is set in an advanced panel with a cornice. The outer bays at the first floor feature bipartite windows in advanced panels that break the eaves, adorned with bracketted skewputts, kneelers, and fleur-de-lis finials on the dormerheads. There is also a window in the screen wall, slightly recessed to the right. No 53 is a mirror image of No 51, with a canted window in the bay to the right and a bipartite window in the advanced panel on the left, along with a window in the screen wall to the left.

The north elevation of No 51 is blank. Both houses have plate glass glazing patterns in the sash and case windows of No 51, while No 53 features modern glazing. The gablehead is topped with coped skews, and there are gablehead stacks. The roofs are covered with purple slates, and there is a moulded eaves gutter. Original cans are also present.

To the north, there is a saddleback coped rubble wall featuring a "VR" postbox.
