Description
This is a circa 1850 single-span, segmental-arched bridge located over the Fala Dam Burn, near Fala Dam. The bridge was built to replace a ford and originally spanned what was the main road between Edinburgh, Cornhill, and Kelso. It is constructed of random rubble with lime mortar, featuring ashlar spandrels and abutments. The bridge has a rubble parapet with shaped stone copes, and wing walls with stone copes to the east and west, along with training walls at river level. A replacement concrete haunch has been added. J Hunter documented the bridge in Fala and Soutra in 1891. Fala Dam itself is a small, picturesque hamlet situated off the main road.
