Description
1 Farm Cottages in Saughland is an early 19th-century row of single-storey rectangular farm cottages arranged in a T-plan. The cottages are constructed from yellow sandstone, featuring projecting ashlar cills.
The principal elevation faces southeast and consists of an 18-bay row that was originally six 3-bay cottages and an end cottage, which has since been subdivided into four cottages. The doors are timber with a two-leaf frame and lined design. There are two stone chimneys on the left and two harled chimneys on the right.
The northeast elevation showcases a single-storey cottage with a central doorway, long and short quoins, and single windows flanking the doorway, along with a window on each return. It has plain stone skews, a coursed stone stack with a neck cope, and replacement single cans on each gable. This elevation adjoins the main row at the rear.
The northwest elevation is not visible as of 2000. The southwest elevation features the gable end of the building, with plain stone skews, a coursed stone stack with a neck cope, and replacement single cans.
The cottages have 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a piended grey slate roof with metal ridging strips, and painted cast-iron rainwater goods.
The interior was not seen in 2000. The boundary walls consist of low random rubble with rounded copes for the front gardens, arch-topped slatted timber gates, and higher random rubble walls to the sides with irregular copes.
