Description
This is an early 19th century farmhouse, built in a T-plan shape with later additions and alterations. It is situated within Shewington Farm. The north elevation is constructed of tooled coursed sandstone, while the rest of the building is of random rubble with long and short droved dressings. A base course, projecting cills, an eaves course, and long and short quoins are visible.
The north (entrance) elevation is symmetrical. A single-storey, gabled porch faced with cement projects centrally on the ground floor. An 8-pane window is centrally positioned within the porch, and a panelled timber door is located to the right return. There is a window in each flanking bay, with regular window placement on the first floor.
The west elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a single bay and an addition to its right. A window is set off-centre to the left of the ground floor. A 20th century glazed timber porch obscures the doorway to the right. A single window is above the porch on the first floor.
The south elevation is also asymmetrical, with a gabled single bay. A section of wall is advanced centrally on the ground floor, flanked to the left by a modern small-pane timber door with glazed vertical panels on each side. A window is located on the left return of the first floor; the right return is not visible.
The east elevation is asymmetrical. A small window is placed on the ground and first floors of the central bay. Regular window placement is seen on the ground and first floors of the flanking bay to the left. A gabled bay projects to the right, with a window off-centre on both the ground and first floors.
Most of the windows are 12-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is covered in grey slate with a lead ridge. Stone skews are present. Droved, coped gablehead stacks feature circular cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods are fitted. The interior was not inspected in 1998.
A single-storey, 3-bay, rectangular-plan bothy with an addition to the rear is also present. Its construction is of tooled random sandstone rubble with stugged and rubble dressings. The west elevation is near-symmetrical with a boarded timber door set in the centre bay and windows in each flanking bay. The south elevation is blank. The east elevation is asymmetrical, featuring a window in the bay to the left. A 19th century addition adjoins the farmhouse to the right and includes two windows to the left return. A tall, coped wallhead stack with circular cans is located in the re-entrant angle; the right return is obscured by the farmhouse. The north elevation is near-symmetrical with a boarded timber door in the centre and a 20th century porch to the left. Various small-pane timber windows are present. It has a graded grey slate roof with a lead ridge, coped stone skews, a coped brick gablehead stack, and cast-iron rainwater goods.
