Description
The Dovecot in Thornton is a late 18th century single chamber lectern dovecot situated above a ground floor room. It is constructed from tooled coursed pink sandstone with droved dressings, featuring relieving arches, long and short quoins, and coped gables. The structure is currently roofless, as of 1998.
On the northwest elevation, there is a broad central doorway leading to the ground floor. The southwest elevation has an opening in the center of the ground floor, with a large opening above that is fitted with a boarded timber door. The southeast elevation displays 18 flight holes above a flight ledge beneath the roof, along with the base of a sundial to the left skewputt. The northeast elevation features a window at the center of the ground floor.
Inside, there are brick nesting boxes on the northwest wall above the doorway, remnants of brick nesting boxes on the southeast wall, and evidence of joist holes above the ground floor room.
