Description

This is a bridge dating to 1848, originally featuring three elliptical arches that were replaced with embankments in the late 1960s due to subsidence caused by coal mining. The bridge parapet is constructed of coursed, stugged sandstone ashlar with droved piers and a wide string course, topped with corniced flat coping. Pink sandstone armorial panels are integrated into the centre of the parapets, displaying the inscription "SEMPER VICTOR". It is possible the bridge was designed by William Burn, coinciding with the design of Whitehill House. The bridge is located to the north of Whitehill House and forms a group value context with Whitehill House. Historic records from the Scottish Record Office and Ordnance Survey maps (both 1852 and 1892 editions) document the bridge’s construction and subsequent use.
