Description

The ice house at Thornton dates from the mid-19th century and features a segmental-arched design. It is constructed from stugged coursed sandstone with stugged dressings. The doorways are topped with a tooled sandstone arch, and the structure has tooled coping. The grass roof slopes down to ground level on the southeast side and meets a low rubble wall on the northwest side. There are boarded timber doors located at the center of the northeast and southwest elevations. Inside, there is a rectangular well with a cement surround, which has been altered.
