Description
Rosedale House is a mid-19th century house of asymmetrical design, set back to the northeast of a lower, six-bay block and enclosed by a recessed screen wall. A slightly projecting, corbelled central bay is a prominent feature. The house is constructed of snecked and stugged ashlar sandstone, with droved window surrounds, chamfered reveals, long and short quoins, and a rendered outbuilding to the northeast.
The northwest (entrance) elevation presents a main three-bay block and a set-back six-bay block. The central bay is advanced, with a full-height design incorporating a timber-panelled door at ground level, a corbelled detail with a single window above, and a blank square panel to the gablehead. A window is located at ground level in the bay to the right, and a dormer with a gablet roof above. A window is also present at ground level in the bay to the left, with a window above and a blank square panel in the gablehead. The set-back six-bay block has a window at ground level in the bay to the left of centre, with a blank square panel to its gablehead. A window is found in the following bay, with a gable above, and another window is set back to the outer left. A wall with a rectangular doorway projects at a right angle to the northwest to join the screen wall. The screen wall is topped with twin ball finials. Further details of this elevation include a timber-panelled door, windows, a boarded door, and various blank panels.
The southeast (rear) elevation is irregular, with a two-storey, two-bay section to the left and a single-story three-bay section to the right. A two-leaf, glazed door with a fanlight sits above at ground level in the central bay, with a dormer with a gablet roof above. A window is present at ground level in the bay to the right, and a window with a gable and chimney stack is in the outer right bay. A window at ground level is in the bay to the left, with a dormer window above. Finally, a ground-floor window and a first-floor gablehead window occupy the outer left bay.
The southwest elevation is symmetrical and three-bayed, featuring a dormer window at first floor in the centre. Canted and corniced three-light windows are located on the ground floor in both the right and left bays, each with a dormer window above.
The house features 12- and 8-pane timber sash and case windows, with some lying-pane windows to the projecting wing and rear attic. The roof is covered in grey slate, with ashlar coped stacks, coped skews, and cast-iron rainwater goods incorporating decorative hoppers.
