Dovecot, Pittendreich, Melville Dykes Road, Lasswade

This is an early 18th-century doocot, located near Pittendreich House on Melville Dykes Road in Lasswade. It is a square, tall structure without a roof. The doocot is built of rubble sandstone, featuring a chamfered doorway on the northwest face. There are remains of a blocked opening above a slightly recessed upper stage. The southwest and northeast gables have ashlar crowstepped gables, beaked skewputts, and a surviving decorative wrought-iron weather vane on the southwest gablehead. A ledge runs along the east angle.

Inside, the walls are lined with square stone nesting boxes, and there are timber beams with remnants of a timber floor at the upper level. The doocot stands complete to the wallhead. It likely would have originally been harl-pointed, and the northeast gable has 19th-century replacement crowsteps. The structure appears on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1854 and is documented in various publications.
