Steading, Mosshouses Farm

The Steading at Mosshouses Farm is an early 19th-century building, with some elements dating back to the late 18th century and later modifications. It is arranged in a U-shape on sloping ground, consisting of a two-storey, three-bay farmhouse and two free-standing ranges set at an angle. The eastern range is single-storey, while the western range is also single-storey and includes a hayloft or granary. The structure is built of rubble with roughly squared and stugged dressings, featuring a dry dash finish on the front and side of the house, along with brick additions and repairs, and timber lintels on the ranges.

The southeast elevation of the farmhouse faces an open courtyard and has a wallhead that has been raised at least once. There is an off-centre door to the right, with a blank wall above on the first floor, and a window on each floor in the flanking bays. The northwest elevation, which is the rear, has two irregular windows at ground level, with the smaller window possibly reinstated from an earlier property, and a small window at the centre on the first floor. The southwest gable features an opening at ground level.

Inside, the farmhouse retains most of its original window fittings and joinery, although one fireplace has been removed and some windows were blocked in 1993. The end stacks have circular and polygonal cans, and the building has ashlar coped skews with grey slates, some of which are slipping at the rear.

The northeast range contains a barn with an opening in the gabled southeast end and a brick stack in the southern corner. Several openings in this range have been blocked or altered. The southwest range features a sliding machinery door and a flat-roofed dormer that breaks the eaves on the courtyard side. There is a hayloft or granary door in the southeast gable, which is accessed by a timber ladder, and a later opening to the upper level in the northwest gable end. This range also has substantial brick additions to its outer elevation and is linked to the farmhouse at the northern angle by a brick screen wall. The roofing is made of corrugated sheet metal.
