Description
North Gate-Lodge, dating to circa 1896, is a single-story, three-bay cottage orne, with a rear addition constructed in 1984. It is built of painted, droved sandstone ashlar with polished dressings. Notable features include chamfered reveals, overhanging eaves, pierced bargeboards to the gables, and kingpost detailing to the gableheads.
The southwest (entrance) elevation is asymmetrical with a three-bay arrangement. A gabled porch is advanced to the center and includes pierced bargeboards, a boarded timber door with decorative wrought ironwork and a two-pane fanlight. A stepped hoodmould, containing a hand bearing a sword (the emblem of the Dewar family of Vogrie), is positioned centrally. A small window is set into the right return, and a canted window with a slate roof is located in the gabled bay to the outer left. A small window is also present on the outer right.
The southeast elevation is asymmetrical and three-bayed, featuring tooled sandstone with droved dressings. A large-pane window is in the gabled bay to the outer left, also with a hoodmould. The crest of the Dewar family, surmounted by a decorative hoodmould, is set into the gablehead. The center and left bays exhibit regular fenestration.
The northeast elevation presents a window to the center, partially obscured by the 1984 addition, which is of rectangular plan, constructed from concrete with fixed windows incorporating top hoppers, and finished with a red pantiled piended roof.
The northwest elevation is two-bayed, featuring a large-pane window with a hoodmould in the gabled bay to the right. The crest of the Dewar family, surmounted by a decorative hoodmould, is also set within the gablehead above. A large pane window is positioned in the bay to the left.
Modern windows have been replaced and fitted with top hoppers. The roof is covered in purple grey slate with a lead ridge, and incorporates cast iron rainwater goods. There are two coped ridge stacks topped with octagonal cans.
The interior was not inspected in 1997.
Decorative cast iron railings, gates, and polygonal gatepiers, topped with ball and spike finials, are also present.
Originally part of the Vogrie estate, North Gate-Lodge is similar in style to the West Lodge (listed separately), though with a reversed plan.
