Description

This is an early 19th-century cottage located at 18 Main Street, Dewartown. Originally two cottages (numbered 17 and 18), it has a rectangular plan and five bays. The exterior is built of whitewashed, tooled random rubble with polished stone dressings. The right-hand side features rusticated long and short quoins. The north-western (principal) elevation has an asymmetrical design. A timber panelled door, offset to the left of the second bay, is flanked by two carved stone panels and windows in the first and third bays. A window is positioned in the penultimate bay to the right, with a blind door at the far right. The north-eastern, south-western, and south-eastern elevations are obscured by adjoining properties. The cottage has 2-pane timber sash and case windows. The roof is grey slate with a lead ridge, stone skews, cast iron rainwater goods and polished sandstone coped gablehead stacks topped with circular cans. The interior was not inspected in 1997. The carved panels on either side of the door are described as naïve 18th-century neoclassical decorative elements by J Thomas. Historic records, including the New Statistical Account of Scotland (1845), Ordnance Survey maps from 1852 and 1892, and various publications, provide further details about the building. Photographs from around 1920 to 1975 are also part of the historical record.
