Description

This is an earlier 19th century house of rectangular plan, possibly dating from the first half of the 18th century. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure built of tooled, coursed sandstone with polished decorative dressings. The ground floor features blank armorial shields carved into the stonework; the first floor has droved dressings and quoins. The northwest (principal) elevation is symmetrical, with a timber door centrally positioned and featuring decorative buckles to its surround. Matching surrounds feature on the windows in the flanking bays. The first floor has regular window placement, with polished cills and lintels. The northeast and southeast elevations were not visible in 1997, and the southwest elevation is obscured by an adjoining building. Twelve-pane timber sash and case windows are present throughout. The roof is grey slate with a lead ridge, stone skews, cast iron rainwater goods, and polished coped gablehead stacks with circular cans. The interior was not inspected in 1997. The New Statistical Account describes Dewartown as originally a linear village with plantations opposite the road, now replaced by houses. Stonework at ground floor level indicates that the window and door openings have been altered. Statutory address is 9 DEWARTOWN.
