Description
The Tolbooth located at 176-180 High Street in Dalkeith has its origins in the mid-17th century and was likely reworked in the 18th century. This two-storey building features a simple classical design with seven bays arranged in a 3-1-3 pattern. The structure is primarily built of ashlar, with the east and south elevations harled. It has rusticated quoins and has undergone significant repairs in some areas, including cement render and concrete cill repairs. A base course runs along the building, and there is a moulded cornice on the west and south elevations, with remnants visible on the east elevation.
On the west elevation, there is a central doorpiece with a bolection moulded surround and a pediment that contains a cartouche featuring the Scott coat-of-arms. The entrance has a two-leaf panelled door. Above this, at the first floor, is a moulded panel inscribed "EFB CMLB 1648" accompanied by two coronets. The fenestration is regularly arranged, with taller windows on the first floor.
The east elevation has a single-storey lean-to porch addition at the center, with a door on the left return and two windows facing east. This porch is connected to the southwest corner of the former stable range of No 182 High Street, known as the Cross Keys Hotel. There are two windows at ground level on the left side and a stair window to the left of center.
On the south elevation, there is a window at ground level to the left of center. The north elevation is adjoined to No 182 High Street, the Cross Keys Hotel.
The building features 12 and 16-pane glazing patterns in its sash and case windows, with a top-hopper window at ground level on the east side. All windows are barred. The roof is covered with grey slates and has a piended design, with no chimney stacks present.
Inside, there is a former weigh-room with three windows, accessed by several steps to the left. At the rear, there is a cloakroom with a window facing south, and a hatch in the floor leads to a former pit prison, which is approximately six feet square with rubble walls and an earth floor. A straight stair from the street leads to the right, turning quarter to the right to a two-windowed room that was the former upper prison. This then dog-legs to the left, leading to a one-windowed kitchen on the left and a door to the right that opens into a three-windowed former courtroom, which features a plain cornice and a coffered ceiling, except for the south wall.
