Description

Linden Lodge is an earlier 19th century, two-storey asymmetric villa located at Linden Place in Loanhead, accompanied by ancillary outbuildings. The building features coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and has a first-floor cill band.

The principal (west) elevation consists of a two-storey, three-bay design with a central pilastered doorcase. This doorcase includes a 12-pane glazed upper door with a solid bottom panel. To the left of the door is a security light, and to the right is a downpipe, with windows flanking the entrance. On the first floor, there are three 12-pane sash and case windows.

The north elevation has a blind wall with a wallhead chimney and a recessed low wing. The left return features a lattice-glazed window, while the right return has a four-pane window. There is a modern timber lean-to adjoining this wing, which includes two doors, a glazed double window, and a window on the right return.

The east elevation displays asymmetric fenestration with a bowed left bay, an 8-pane window in the center, and a 12-pane window to the right. There is an addition in the re-entrant angle that has a four-pane window and a chimney piece on the right return.

On the south elevation, there is a glazed 8-pane door located off-center and a four-pane window at the bottom left. Above the door, there is a chimney with four mismatched cans.

The interior was not seen during the 2000 inspection. The villa mostly features 12-pane sash and case windows and has a piended slate roof with blocked eaves and end stacks.

The outbuilding, which may have originally served as a coach-house or stables, is a single-storey structure built of rubble with a skew gabled roof. The south elevation has a central 6-pane glazed window with double timber doors flanking it, and a lean-to extension on the left. The east elevation features a gablehead window, while the north elevation has a blank wall facing Linden Place with a blocked window. The west elevation includes a chimney stack with two cans.

The property is enhanced by square ashlar piers flanking the driveway, with pedestrian gateways—one of which is blocked. The rubble walls have heavy copes, and the original entrance features wrought-iron gates.
