Description
This is a square-plan gazebo dated 1731. It is constructed of cream sandstone ashlar, with rubble to the sides and rear, and has polished dressings. Pilasters mark the angles, supporting an entablature on the north face, and an eaves course and cornice above. The front, or north, elevation features a moulded, shouldered, and architraved doorway; above is a consoled arch with a keystone and the date “1731”. Chamfered windows are present on the east and south faces, while the west face has a small, square opening. The roof is now missing.
The gazebo is situated in the walled garden, south of the main horseshoe-plan garden, directly opposite the Dairy. It is part of a group of buildings including Mavisbank House, the doocot, Dairy, walled gardens, an ice house, a game larder, and the East Lodge at Lasswade. The structure appears on Roy’s Map of 1750.
