Description

The steading at Melville Castle is a courtyard plan structure that dates back to the early 19th century but incorporates buildings from the mid to late 18th century. It has undergone significant alterations, with two ranges still remaining.

The west range, which includes a cartshed and granary, is two storeys high and has a rear wall that adjoins the walled garden. The south gable and one bay may date from the mid to late 18th century, while the rest was extended in the early 19th century to create a two-storey cartshed and granary. This section is constructed of squared and coursed rubble with ashlar dressings. It features three cart openings at the ground level, with relieving arches indicating that there were originally two openings. There are doors flanking these openings, and additional doors and windows above in the loft. The range has a rubble coped wall with an ashlar gatepier at the northeast angle and a window in the north gable. The roof is covered with grey slates. There are also ruinous single-storey buildings made of rubble and brick that form the north wall of the steading.

The south range is a single four-bay structure with a piend roof, originally open at the front, likely built between 1810 and 1831. The ashlar piers suggest it was constructed as a cartshed, but the openings have since been blocked with rubble, incorporating two windows. The courtyard walls adjoining this range include two large ashlar gatepiers to the south. The courtyard itself is walled to the east, although those ranges do not survive, and this section was built between 1831 and 1841. To the west of the walled garden, there is a single-storey lodge that is currently derelict as of 1990. The lodge has a roughly square plan with a two-bay north front, a tall piended slate roof with a central stack, and is built of rubble with ashlar margins. It features a door on the north side and a 12-pane timber sash and case window to the right.
