Description

The Old School House in Borthwick is a mid-19th century single-storey and attic cottage designed in the Tudor Gothic style. It has an irregular plan and features stugged squared and snecked sandstone with polished dressings, a base course, long and short quoins, chamfered reveals, and overhanging eaves.

The northwest elevation is asymmetrical, with a gabled entrance porch that protrudes at the center. It has a shouldered doorway topped with a blind tablet and a central lamp, along with a boarded timber door that has decorative wrought iron hinges. To the left of the porch is a small window, while the outer left bay contains a bipartite window. The outer right bay features a tripartite window with a hoodmould, and above, there is a single window with a hoodmould set in the gablehead.

The southwest and southeast elevations were not visible in 1997. The northeast elevation has a bipartite window offset to the left at ground level and a single window set in the gablehead above. There is a later addition in the center with a timber door to the left, two small two-pane rooflights, and a ventilation chimney in the roof. Additionally, there is a lean-to addition on the outer left with a window that breaks the eaves, featuring a small gable with a kingpost detail.

The building predominantly has eight-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with lead ridges, cast iron rainwater goods, and harled coped ridge and shouldered gablehead stacks, both topped with circular cans.

The boundary wall consists of tooled rubble with angular coping, topped with iron railings and featuring a central iron gate.
