Description

The stables at Borthwick Old Parish Manse date from the mid-19th century and are now a private house. This single-storey and attic structure has a rectangular plan and consists of three bays. It is built from tooled squared and snecked rubble with droved dressings and features chamfered reveals.

The southwest elevation, which serves as the entrance, is asymmetrical. It has a central doorway at ground level with a two-leaf boarded timber door. To the right is a four-pane window, while to the left is a boarded timber stable door with a two-pane fanlight above it. There is also a timber and glazed casement window with boarded timber shutters that breaks the eaves, topped by a catslide roof. An additional two-pane horizontal window is located to the outer left, and a large two-leaf boarded timber door with an eight-pane window above it is found on the outer right.

The southeast elevation is symmetrical and constructed of random rubble, featuring a central two-pane window at ground level.

The northeast elevation is asymmetrical, also made of random rubble, with an extension to the outer left. The quoins of the original building are off-centre to the left, and there is a four-pane window off-centre to the right at ground level.

The northwest elevation is blank.

The building includes a variety of fixed, casement, and sash and case timber windows. The roof is covered with graded grey slate, featuring regularly placed slate ventilators and irregular skylights at the rear. It has a lead ridge and coped ashlar skews, along with cast iron rainwater goods and a gablehead stack on the southeast side.

The interior was not seen in 1997.
