Description

Borthwick Church Churchyard dates from the 12th century onwards and features a near quadrangular terraced layout. The churchyard is enclosed by a tooled, squared, and snecked sandstone wall with semi-circular coping on the west side, while the remaining walls are made of random rubble. There are iron railings on the southeast and southwest sides.

To the west, there are droved war memorial gatepiers with stop-chamfered margins and pyramidal caps, along with decorative ironwork gates topped with thistle finials, inscribed with "1914" and "1919". In the upper graveyard, the Middleton family has an enclosure in the northeast corner, the Dewar of Vogrie enclosure is located against the wall to the east, and the Kidd family enclosure, which funded the present church, is situated in the center to the east of the church.

There is a central opening in the wall to the southeast, featuring stop-chamfered, pyramidal-capped gate piers that lead to the upper terrace, which dates from around 1857. The Borthwick family burial vault is located in the east corner and is accessed via the terrace below. The Brown of Currie enclosure is adjacent.

Two flights of stone steps with iron railings, perpendicular to the buttressed wall of the upper terrace, lead down to the middle terrace. Here, there is an entrance to the Borthwick burial vault on the east side, which has a triangular arched chamfered doorway with a stepped hood mould enclosing a blank shield, flanked by vertical slit windows and buttresses, along with a timber gate to the west. The lower terrace slopes down to the south and features a four-centred doorway with a hood mould leading to a vault beneath the steps, as well as a timber gate to the southwest.
