Description

Hardengreen House is a 1796 farmhouse of three bays, originally rectangular in plan, with extensions and alterations dating to circa 1830 and later. It is constructed of tooled sandstone with polished dressings to the southeast elevation, and droved sandstone elsewhere. A moulded eaves course features, alongside raised margins and quoins; the 18th century southeast elevation displays polished long and short quoins, while later additions incorporate stugged strip and long and short quoins.

The southeast elevation, which serves as the main entrance, is symmetrical, showcasing the original 1796 farmhouse with regular fenestration to both the ground and first floors. A two-bay extension from circa 1830 adjoins the left side. This extension includes a flat-roofed, corniced sandstone porch projecting from the ground floor, with a window flanked by an opening leading to a doorway on the right return. A canopy shelters a panelled timber door on the right return, and a window is positioned above on the first floor. An advanced bay to the outer left also features a centrally positioned window on both the ground and first floors.

The northeast elevation is asymmetrical, with a window slightly off-centre to the left of the first floor and another set within the gablehead. The northwest elevation is also asymmetrical; the original three-bay house from 1796 occupies the left side. A gabled, single-bay, two-storey addition projects centrally, with a single window off-centre to the right of the first floor. This is flanked to the right by a boarded timber door at ground floor and a window on the right return, the left return is blank except for a small single-storey block with a single window at the re-entrant angle. Other windows are positioned to the flanking bays on both the ground and first floors. A further 19th-century lean-to extends to the right, featuring a glazed timber door and irregular fenestration; a single window is advanced to the left of the first floor, with the remainder of the elevation blank.

The southwest elevation is asymmetrical, with the ground floor largely obscured by a 20th-century lean-to conservatory. A single-storey lean-to is situated to the outer left with two windows. A window is off-centre to the left of the first floor, and another is set within the gablehead of the 18th-century block.

The majority of the windows are 12-pane timber sash and case. The roofs are covered in grey slate, piended to the 19th-century addition, with lead ridges. Stone skews are present on the 18th-century block. Coped gablehead stacks are visible on the 18th-century section, with a coped wallhead stack on the 19th-century addition, all topped with circular cans. Cast iron rainwater goods are also present. The interior was not inspected in 1998.
