Description
The King’s Gate is a triumphal arch dated 1822, constructed from polished, coursed sandstone ashlar. It was built to commemorate George IV's visit to Newbattle Abbey and formed the entrance to an avenue that previously led to the Abbey, though this route is now largely obscured by a modern housing estate. The arch features a high, round-arched central opening with decorative impost details, flanked by two lower gateways. A polished parapet sits atop a moulded cornice. A blank tablet is set into the west elevation of the arch, while the east elevation features a tooled tablet inscribed with "THE KINGS GATE AUGUST XXVIII CVXXX XXII". The structure is shown on both the first edition (1852) and second edition (1892) Ordnance Survey maps.
