Description
Newbattle Viaduct, designed by John Miller in 1847, features 23 semi-circular arches. It is constructed from coursed, rock-faced sandstone with brick voussoirs and soffits. The structure includes ashlar imposts, hoodmoulds over the arches, and a band course. The parapet is made of tooled, coursed sandstone with ashlar coping and metal railings. There are reinforcing iron strappings along the soffits and piers, as well as a projecting stone base to the piers. The piers also have blind recessed arches filled with coursed, tooled sandstone. At the southeast end, there is a skewed arch over the road, featuring stone voussoirs and flanking buttresses made of rock-faced sandstone. Towards the northwest, a tall arch with stepped buttresses spans the River South Esk.
