Description

Glencairn is a late 19th-century villa located at 13 Waverly Road, Dalkeith. The house is a two-storey structure with an attic and basement, arranged as a three-bay design. The exterior is constructed of stugged, squared, and snecked masonry, with ashlar facing the south and ashlar dressings throughout. A band course separates the ground and first floors on the south side, while a string course is visible between the ground floor and basement. There is also an eaves course with overhanging eaves, along with raised long and short quoins. Raised margins and chamfered reveals are present on the windows.

The south (Waverly Road) elevation features a prominent, heavily corniced doorpiece at the centre, adorned with a raised surround and a pierced balcony above featuring a diamond motif. A panelled door is topped by a plate glass fanlight, and a Venetian vestibule screen is also incorporated. An ashlar perron stair leads to the front door, accompanied by a semi-circular arched opening with an iron grille. A tripartite window is centrally positioned on the first floor. A full-height canted window is in the bay to the left, with a cornice marking the ground and first floor division, and an ogee headed opening at basement level. The bay to the right has a canted ground floor window, also with a cornice and blocking course, while an advanced panel on the first floor showcases a tripartite window with stop-chamfered angles and a basement-level ogee headed opening.

The north elevation is largely blank to the right of centre. A tall tripartite stair window is located at centre, and a window is situated in a rectangular projection on the ground floor to the left, accompanied by a small understair window. Two windows are found on the first floor to the left.

The west elevation is also three bays wide. A pair of glazed doors lead to a attached glazed greenhouse in the centre bay. A canted window with a cornice and blocking course is present on the ground floor in the left bay, with a simple window in the right bay. The first-floor windows are regularly spaced. An off-set stack is positioned between the centre and right bays.

The east elevation includes a window on the ground floor and two windows on the first floor. L-plan, piend-roofed single-storey service wings are adjoined to the right, with irregular window placement. A lean-to coal shed is attached to the re-entrant on the same side.

The principal elevations feature plate glass windows in sash and case frames. The roof has three varied dormer windows on the south pitch, a mix of piended and canted designs, as well as gabled and stepped forms. A three-light dormer is located on the west pitch. Corniced, shouldered stacks are present; two ridge stacks, a wallhead stack to the left and right of the east elevation, one stack to the right of the north elevation, and another to the right of centre of the west elevation. The roof itself is a low piend and platform structure covered in grey slates, with some original cans remaining.

The interior contains fine plasterwork, including cornices with grape detailing. The attic has been subdivided into rooms.

The original stable and coach house, now a garage, is a single-storey building with an attic, located to the north and constructed of brick. It is characterised by overhanging eaves and grey slates with pierced red ridge tiles. A gablehead stack is situated to the east. The south elevation features enlarged carriage shed doors in an advanced bay, a window within a mock timber-framed gable also advanced on tree trunk piers, and a pulley hoist. A large door, originally two stable doors, is on the left, alongside a tack room window to the right. A cat-slide dormer window is also present on the right. The east elevation has a door to the right of centre and a window to the right, with a boarded opening in the gablehead, triangular and open at the apex with scalloped edges. A window is present on the west elevation, alongside a timber shed.
