Description

The property comprises a house and gate built around 1781. It is a single and two-storey, six-bay, gable-ended range with a single-storey projection to the northeast, creating an L-shaped cottage block. The construction is primarily sandstone rubble, partially harled, with brick additions at the rear. Some windows have droved margins.

The southwest (principal) elevation is irregular, with six bays grouped as 4-2. To the left is a single-storey, four-bay block, which is currently inhabited as a cottage. It features a boarded door set to the right of the centre, and a window to the right of it. There are windows in each of the remaining bays to the left, and also in each bay of the two-bay gabled northwestern end. A gablehead stack is situated above. To the right is a two-storey, two-bay block, used as a disused garage. It has a window at ground level in the bay to the left, and a window at the first floor in the bay to the right. A lower, blank bay is located to the outer right.

The northeast (rear) elevation is irregular, with seven bays grouped as 5-1-1. A five-bay, lean-to brick addition is set to the left. This addition has a window in the centre bay, a blocked doorway to the left, a two-leaf door to the outer left, and a window to the outer right. A window is also present in the bay to the right of the addition, which corresponds to the rear of the original cottage. A full-height stack is slightly advanced in the gabled bay at the extreme right.

The windows are timber sash and case, with 12 panes, with a casement window in the two-storey block. The roof is covered with red pantiles. Stacks are ashlar-coped and harled, with ashlar skews, and the rainwater goods are cast iron.

The gateway has square-plan brick gatepiers with an ashlar cope and stone ball finials. Decorative wrought-iron gates are present, flanked by downswept brick walls with a square ashlar cope and upswept wrought iron railings that match the design of the gates.

The inclusion of a gate lodge intended to provide accommodation for servants, despite the apparent rustic style. The ball finials were originally accompanied by putti figures, which have since been stolen. This property is associated with Barony House, which is listed separately. The property is shown on the first edition Ordnance Survey map of 1854.
