Description

Carlethan House, located on Wadingburn Lane in Lasswade, is a classical house built in the later 19th century, with some later alterations and additions. It is a two-storey, three-bay structure designed in a T plan, featuring a two-storey, two-bay wing at the rear and a single-storey, single-bay garage addition also at the rear. The house is constructed of grey sandstone ashlar, while the garage addition is rendered. It has a base course, consoled and corniced cills to the windows, an eaves course, and deep overhanging eaves.

On the northwest (principal) elevation, there is a raised Gibbsian doorpiece at the ground level in the central bay, which features a four-panelled timber door, with a window above it on the first floor. Each of the flanking bays has a window on both floors.

The southwest (side) elevation is irregular with four bays arranged in a 1-2-1 grouping. There is a two-bay addition set back in the centre, with a boarded door positioned wide in the left bay at ground level and a replacement window flanking it to the left. Above, there is a window on the first floor. A window is located at ground level in the left bay, and a small window is above it on the first floor. There is also a boarded door leading to the rendered single-storey addition on the outer left, with a window set wide to the left at ground level in the outer left bay, which is the original side of the house.

The northeast (side) elevation is irregular with five bays arranged in a 1-2-2 grouping. A two-bay addition is set back in the centre, featuring a modern lean-to conservatory that spans both bays at ground level. There is a window on the first floor in the left bay and a small window in the right bay above. The single-bay garage addition is set back on the outer left and has a modern garage door. The original two-bay side of the house to the right includes a window on each floor in the outer right bay and a window at ground level in the left bay.

The house features six-pane timber sash and case windows, fixed four-pane small windows in the rear addition, and modern large-pane windows at ground level in the rear addition. The roof is covered with grey slate in a piended style, while the addition and garage have purple slate. There are ashlar coped stacks on the southwest and northeast sides, along with cast-iron rainwater goods.
