Description

This is an early 18th century garden with later additions, located at Cadboll House and Walled Garden. The garden itself is harled with ashlar margins, and includes a newer wing with rendered margins. It is currently arranged in an L-shape, consisting of a three-bay house originally facing south with an asymmetrical central bay and entrance, and a wing added later, likely in the mid to late 18th century, running continuous to the east gable and projecting to the south. The windows are small with plain, chamfered margins. Features include crowsteps and two small attic windows in the west gable. A Macleod crest is carved on the front skewputt, and a sun motif is on the rear skewputt. A modern wing, dating from the mid-1970s, extends south with a wide, shallow, bowed bay window in the south gable on both the ground and first floors, with a further modern extension at the west gable. The garden has multi-pane glazing, renewed end stacks, and a slate roof. Inside the oldest part of the house, a staircase with shaped flat balusters remains. The garden is surrounded by a high, enclosed stone wall constructed of coursed rubble with dressed copes. Various mural stone plaques are set within the walls, including three walled garden tablets: one is an early 18th century marriage lintel inscribed with the initials AE M MM; another is a memorial to Crawford Ross, who was Tacksman of Cadboll for 50 years and died there in 1862; and a third is a memorial to James Young of Cadboll, 1870-1966. A house known as Cadboll House, dated circa 1830, previously stood on this site and was demolished.
