Description
Cadboll House is an early 18th century house with later additions, presenting as an L-plan. The original three-bay house faces south, displaying an asymmetrical centre bay and entrance. A wing, likely built in the mid to later 18th century, adjoins the east gable and projects south to form the L-plan. The house is harled, with ashlar margins, although the new wing has rendered margins. It features small windows with plain chamfered margins, crowsteps, and two small attic windows in the west gable. A Macleod crest is carved on the front skewputt, and a sun motif appears on the rear skewputt. A modern wing, dating from the mid-1970s, extends south with wide, shallow bowed bay windows in the south gable on both the ground and first floors; a further modern extension is at the west gable. The roof is slate and the windows have multi-pane glazing, although these have been renewed. The interior retains a staircase with shaped flat balusters in the oldest section of the house. The property includes an extensive walled garden constructed of coursed rubble with dressed copes. The garden contains three mural stone plaques, one an early 18th century marriage lintel bearing the initials AE and MM, another a memorial to Crawford Ross, Tacksman of Cadboll who died there in 1862, and a third memorial to James Young of Cadboll, who lived from 1870 to 1966. A house of circa 1830, previously on this site, was demolished.
