Description
The Church of Scotland Parish Church in Duror was built in 1826 to a standard design by Thomas Telford. It is an ecclesiastical building still in use as such, and is set within a small, drystone walled burial ground with roughly coped walls. The church is a T-plan building, with its main, four-bay front facing northwest. It is constructed of coursed squared rubble with tooled ashlar dressings and margins. The outer bays on the northwest front feature shallow pointed-headed entrances flanked by architraved paired windows. Further paired windows are found in the northeast gable and on the northeast elevation of the rear wing. Original cast-iron Y-tracery astragals and lattice pane glazing are present in the front windows; wooden replacements with lattice pane glazing are used elsewhere. A standard Parliamentary apex bellcote sits atop the southwest gable, featuring a stumpy pyramidal finial and small angle pinnacles. A similar apex finial is at the northeast gable, with lead-covered flat skews and slate roofs. The interior has been altered with the insertion of later internal party walls, creating an entrance lobby in the northeast corner and a minister's room in the southwest corner. A late 19th-century replacement pulpit stands in its original location on the centre of the northwest wall, and pews of the same date are also present. A distinguishing feature is the absence of windows in the southwest gable or the southwest dressings of the rear T-wing, serving the Quoad Sacra Parish of Duror.
