Description
St Adamnan's Episcopal Church is a rectangular church built between 1848 and 1851, with a later chancel added in 1911. The chancel and internal fittings were designed by Eden and Hodgson, Architects of London. The church has a simple three-bay nave and is oriented to the northeast with the chancel. It is constructed of rubble stone, with either tooled rubble or polished granite dressings.
The main entrance is in the southwest gable, partially obscured by a simple gabled porch with a side entrance. The southeast elevation has three pointed-headed narrow windows, while the southeast chancel wall features paired round-headed, cusped lancet windows. A large pointed-headed window is located in the northeast gable of the chancel, featuring polished granite cusped and curvilinear tracery incorporating a thistle motif. A small consecration stone dated 1911 is set into the wall below. The building has tooled granite crowsteps and an apex cross. A small bellcote, constructed between 1848 and 1851, sits atop the southwest gable, capped with a simple pyramidal roof. The roofs are slate.
Inside, the church has a simple interior with a polished grey granite canted mural pulpit. A short flight of steps passes through the nave/chancel wall, leading to the pulpit. A grey granite piscina, both dating from 1911, is also present. A chamber organ, likely built by John Snetzler between 1760 and 1775, survives with a restored painted case.
The church is an ecclesiastical building and remains in use. The chancel was added in memory of Bishop Chinnery Haldane. The organ is considered exceptional, and is almost certainly by John Snetzler of London (1710-85), possibly originally located in St Cecilia's Hall, Edinburgh. It was initially installed in Rosse Episcopal Chapel, Fort William in 1817, and moved to Duror in 1880, following the relocation of St Andrew's Church.
