Description
This is a mid-18th century garden pavilion situated within a walled garden at Bighouse. The pavilion is a small, square, two-story, three-bay structure built of harled rubble with polished ashlar dressings and margins.
The west-facing front facade features a central doorway flanked by small, margined windows. Similar detailing is found on the taller windows located in the outer bays of the first floor. The windows have nine- and twelve-pane glazing. Ashlar quoins are present, and there's an eaves band. A tall, margined and corniced wallhead stack sits centrally, with fluted end dies culminating in ball finials. The roof is pyramidal and covered in slate, topped with a weather-vane carved in the shape of a salmon. A first-floor door is located in the south gable, accessible by a forestair which is concealed from the front by a garden wall. Both the ground floor door and the central first-floor window have been blocked. A small lean-to projection is situated at the rear (east), and features a corniced wallhead stack.
The interior of the ground floor chamber retains a bolection moulded chimneypiece, although the rest of the interior has been gutted.
The pavilion is surrounded by high, coped rubble garden walls. A pair of mid-18th century, square, channelled ashlar gate piers, each with a cornice and square cap, are positioned in the centre of the west wall, directly opposite the pavilion. A pair of plain cast-iron gates are set between these piers. The gate piers are aligned with a matching pair located within the east wall, close to the main mansion.
