Description
Probably designed by David Rhind in 1847, these stables are part of the Achnacarry House estate. The building is a two-storey, seven-bay range, facing east, built of squared rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. The symmetrical front has a slightly projecting central bay containing a segmental arched entrance to the stable court. Above the arch is a window and a blind circular window (oculus), with the gable rising to a bellcote with a finial and a cast-iron weathervane. To either side of the central bay are ranges with paired narrow windows, and first-floor windows that rise through the wallhead, with the centre of each range in an enlarged gablet with a finial. Return end gables, each with ground and first-floor windows, provide entrances to associated dwellings. Further pairs of two-bay dwellings in a similar style project from the rear. The windows are fitted with horizontal 8-pane glazing. At the rear are corniced end and ridge stacks, and slate roofs. Behind the stables are diagonal weatherboarded ranges, accessed through a stable arch and opening onto the stable yard. The remnants of the earlier Achnacarry Castle are located nearby. Original plans for the stables, designed by David Rhind of 24 Northumberland Street, Edinburgh, dated 1847, are held at Achnacarry House.
