Walled Garden, Raasay House, Raasay

The Walled Garden at Raasay House dates from the mid-18th century, with a seven-bay frontage from the early 19th century and outer and rear wings added in the later 19th century, specifically designed by Alexander Ross in 1876/77. The building is constructed from Raasay freestone ashlar with polished ashlar dressings and is two storeys high. The central seven bays feature outer and centre bays that are advanced with later gables. All windows are architraved, corniced, and dropped at the ground floor, with a tripartite window in the centre of the first floor, which is now partially blocked by a modern square bay window.

There is a later projecting square porch with round-headed side entrances, paired engaged columns, and a stone balustrade with cast-iron railings. The outer gabled bays, numbered 1 and 9, have two-storey canted bay windows, with 12-pane glazing surviving in the older portion on the first floor, while 2 and 4-pane sashes are found elsewhere. A further gabled two-storey, two-bay wing, dated 1877, is set back to the east. The irregular rear is harled and gabled, featuring corniced end and ridge stacks, and has a slate roof.

The interior is much deteriorated, but some good panelled doors and doorpieces remain in place, along with some fireplaces, including a marble one in the entrance hall, overmantels, pelmets, and enriched plaster ceilings. A large walled garden is located to the rear of the house.

Close to the house, there is a small landing jetty flanked by a mound encircled with a low crenellated wall and spearhead cast-iron railings. The walls are flanked by two large stone recumbent mermaid figures.
