Description

The stable and steading, probably designed by Thomas Muirison around 1815, underwent extensive alterations in the late 19th century. It forms a large, north-facing hollow square, incorporating dwellings, a carriage house, stables, and various offices. The original construction uses coursed rubble with ashlar dressings, while later sections are built with bullfaced rubble and contrasting tooled ashlar sandstone dressings.

A two-story, off-centre tower stands above a round-headed arched entrance, featuring Venetian windows on both the front and rear faces, and a clock face within the pediment. Ball finials adorn the gable apices. Single-story and loft ranges flank the tower, ending in crowstepped outer bays. Numerous segmental-headed entrances are present throughout the structure.

The south-facing elevation is symmetrical, with another round-headed entrance beneath a crowstepped gable, topped with a small cupola and weathervane. Stable ranges with three bays flank this entrance, terminating in advanced crowstepped bays containing paired round-headed carriage houses. The ten-bay east elevation, at a single story with an attic, is divided into five dwellings, with gabled dormers breaking the wallhead. Roll moulding is visible on door and window jambs, and the windows have multi-pane glazing.

The west elevation accommodates further dwellings and additional offices. Coped ridge stacks rise from the roof, which is covered in slate. A complete square existed by 1873, as indicated on the first edition Ordnance Survey map.
