Glensax, Mid Ardross

Mid Ardross is a single storey and attic school and schoolhouse designed by architect Andrew Maitland in Tain between 1857 and 1858. The building is oriented south and constructed from tooled red rubble with tooled ashlar dressings.

The principal part of the building consists of three bays, featuring a central entrance beneath a four-centred arch within a slightly advanced gabled porch. This porch is flanked by lights and has wide crow-stepped outer bays. To the right, there is a large bipartite window, likely lighting the former schoolroom, and to the left, a similar but smaller window. The east return gable elevation has a regular two-bay design with two piended dormers.

At the east gable, there is a further single storey and attic wing with five bays, set back from the main structure. This wing also has a central entrance in an advanced crow-stepped porch, along with two gabletted dormers that feature decorative cast-iron brattishing, which is also present on the porch. The glazing is varied throughout the building.

The structure has end, ridge, and rear stacks, and is topped with slate roofs.
