Description
Roshven House is a country house that has been occupied for over 60 years by the artist Jemima Blackburn. She and her husband purchased the estate in 1854 and built the current house, which appears to have been constructed in two main stages. The taller section of the house is designed in a Scots 17th century vernacular style and is plainer than the lower wing, which features partly mullioned and transomed windows and an unusual circular stack. A tall canted bay facing the driveway likely formed part of an earlier house.
The exterior is mostly made of coursed or snecked rubble with ashlar dressings and has slate roofs. The tall range is three to four storeys high, has a crow-stepped L-plan garden front, and features sash windows, mostly with small panes. There are screen walls on the flanks, one of which has a pointed archway and a sundial beyond. The driveway elevation is asymmetrical and also crow-stepped, with a corbelled angle turret.
The lower range is extensive and mostly two storeys high, containing service areas and a stables court. The wings are of different dates, with the one facing the garden possibly being the earliest. This range is asymmetrical, with the tallest part featuring attics and an outer wing that has gabled dormer heads over distinctive windows and arcaded openings to the courtyard. There are conical-roofed turrets, one of which includes a dovecot.
