Description

Inverness High School, designed by architects Reid and Forbes in 1931, is a modern movement school. It features a long, symmetrical two-storey main block with rear classroom extensions that maintain a similar architectural style. The building is constructed with a reinforced concrete frame and has a central entrance section with seven bays. The wider classroom ranges include taller terminal pylon entrance bays, and additional bays now project from the side elevation.

The main entrance is set in a splayed recess at the center, flanked by pilaster strips and elaborate diamond-detailed doors. Small windows are positioned in a banded wall surface balcony, which has a scalloped cill over the center and pie-crust detailing on the outer sections at the first floor, where it breaks forward to form a porch below. Above this, there is a cornice band and a stepped parapet with a central plinth for a flagstaff.

Classrooms are fitted with long, horizontal windows featuring a metal-framed rectangular glazing pattern, complemented by cill bands and a banded parapet. The entrance blocks are adorned with pilaster strips at the doorways, which include double leaf diamond-detailed doors, and scrolled ironwork in the fanlight and on the balcony above. Similar scrolls in stone are present on the stepped moulded crowning plinth.
